Interact club is working with Habitat for Humanity on December 16 to give families the opportunity to have a place they can call home.

Interact club brings students together to serve their community. Students learn the importance of respecting others, helpfulness and demonstrating leadership skills.

The club meets every other Monday, and sometimes Thursdays at the Ross library. At meetings, students participate in helping the high school with fundraising, food drives and other community projects.

For the past 15 years, BHS students have been completing two Habitat for Humanity Student Builds a year, accumulating over 35 builds in total.

Habitat For Humanity is an international nonprofit organization that helps families build or improve homes to accommodate their needs. The organization helps local communities in all 50 states in the U.S. as well as communities in over 70 countries.

“It’s an organization that instead of giving a handout—it’s more of a hand up for people who can’t afford regular housing” said Mrs. Longo, Ross librarian and advisor of the Interact club.

Habitat for Humanity takes donations from other organizations and major companies/corporations such as: Home Depot, Wells Fargo, Whirlpool, Bank of America, etc.

“They rely on clubs like Interact and big companies, and rely on a lot on donations,” Mrs. Longo said.

With every build the Interact club takes part in; the club donates $1,000. Students have already made that donation to the build in Huntington Station.

About 15 students from the club volunteer in the student builds.

“My first year being a volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity was during my junior year,” said Yennifer Alvarado, Ross senior and president of the Interact Club.

Working on these builds helps students understand the importance of working together, while also giving to those that may be less fortunate than others.

“It’s a project that’s a rewarding experience to have students accomplish.” Mrs. Longo said.

The project is also an opportunity to learn basic building fundamentals, as well the steps on how to make a home feel like home.

“When I was at the building site I helped in many ways,” Alvarado said. “I helped the contractors, who were nice to all of us in the interact club, I helped them paint the walls of the house and helped put up the fences.”

While participating in many builds, Habitat for Humanity shares the stories of families that the volunteers are building their homes for.

There’s no need to have previous construction experience in order to participate in these builds. Habitat for Humanity have Site Supervisors, Ameri Corp Leaders, and Crew Leaders who are very knowledgeable and help guide the students and/or faculty taking part in the build.

“Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity teaches me a lesson that I will never forget,” Alvarado said. “I learned that some people live in the streets, not because they want to, but because they don’t have another option and we can help people in our community without having to pay a dollar which is awesome.”

Alvarado will be returning and helping in the upcoming build in Huntington Station, as well as Interact members who have never worked with Habitat for Humanity.

“[I’m hoping] this can teach me how hard work pays off because I know afterward the house is going to look great.” Javier Chevalier, Ross student and Interact member said.

Habitat for Humanity also accepts those who wish to volunteer individually, or with a small group. The opportunity to help give people the homes they deserve are endless.

El club de Interacción une a sus estudiantes para servir en su comunidad. Los estudiantes aprenden la importancia del respeto hacia otros, colaboración y aprendizaje de cualidades de liderazgo. El club se reúne algunos lunes, y a veces martes en la biblioteca de Ross. En sus reuniones, los estudiantes participan ayudando a la escuela recaudando fondos, colectas de comida y otros proyectos comunitarios.

En los últimos 15 años, estudiantes de BHS han completado dos Hábitat por la Humanidad Estudiantes Construyen al año, acumulando 35 construcciones en total. 

Hábitat por la Humanidad es una organización internacional sin fines de lucro que ayuda a familias a construir o renovar hogares que acomoden a sus necesidades. La organización ayuda comunidades locales en los 50 estados del país igual que a otras comunidades en más de 70 países. “Es una organización que, en vez de dar la mano, son manos a la obra para las personas que no pueden mantener un hogar regular” Dijo Mrs. Longo, bibliotecaria en la librería de Ross y consejera del Club de Interacción. 

Hábitat por la Humanidad acepta donaciones de otras organización y grandes compañías/corporaciones como: Home Depot, Wells Fargo, Whirpool, Bank of America, etc. 

“Cuentan con clubes como este [Club de interacción] y grandes compañías, y se sostienen con muchas donaciones” dijo Mrs. Longo 

Con cada construcción que el Club de Interacción realiza; el club dona $1,000. Los estudiantes ya han hecho la donación para construir en Huntington Station. 

Alrededor de 15 estudiantes del club se ofrecieron en las construcciones estudiantiles. 

“Mi primer año siendo voluntaria para Hábitat por la Humanidad fue en grado once” Comento Yennifer Alvarado, próxima graduada en Ross y presidente del Club de Interacción. 

Trabajar en estas construcciones ayuda a los estudiantes a entender la importancia del trabajo en equipo, mientras se da a aquellos que son menos afortunados. 

“Es un proyecto recompensado de experiencia que se espera que los estudiantes logren” cuenta Mrs. Longo.  

El proyecto es capaz de dar oportunidades para aprender los fundamentos básicos de construcción, también como los pasos para lograr que una casa se sienta como un hogar. 

“Cuando estuve en el lugar de construcción ayudé en todas las maneras” relata Alvarado. “Ayude a los constructores, que fueron muy amable con el Club de Interacción, les ayude a pintar las paredes y poner las vallas” 

Mientras participan en varias construcciones, Hábitat por la Humanidad comparte historias de las familias a las que los voluntarios construyen casas. 

No hay necesidad de tener conocimiento previo en construcción para participar en el proyecto. Hábitat por la Humanidad tiene supervisores en sitio, lideres de Ameri Corp y lideres de equipo con bastante conocimiento y ayuda para guiar a estudiantes y/o miembros de la facultad que deseen participan en la construcción. 

“Colaborar con Hábitat por la Humanidad me enseño una lección que jamás olvidare” relata Alvarado. “Aprendí que algunas personas viven en las calles, no porque quieran, pero porque no tienen otra opción y podemos ayudar a la gente en nuestra comunidad sin tener que pagar un dólar” 

Alvarado volverá y ayudara en la próxima construcción en Huntington Station, contando también con los miembros del Club de Interacción que nunca han participado con Hábitat por la Humanidad. 

“[Estoy deseando] Que esto me enseñe como retribuye el trabajo duro porque sabre que después la casa se verá asombrosa” Javier Chevalier, estudiante de Ross y miembro del club de Interacción comenta. 

Hábitat por la Humanidad también acepta a aquellos que desean ofrecerse individualmente, o con un grupo pequeño. La oportunidad a proveer hogares para aquellos que lo merecen es inagotable.
