Do you want to become a powerful woman to inspire other young girls? On Thursday, Nov. 2, members of the Brentwood High School chapter of Girls Inc. visited the Heritage Club at Bethpage in Farmingdale to attend the 18th annual Fuel Her Fire luncheon. The luncheon itself was from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The goals of the luncheon included hearing from girls and alumnae from Girls Inc. programs and applaud college scholarship recipients. Students were given the opportunity to win raffle prizes and network with female peers and professionals.
“The annual luncheon is about having the opportunity to share about Girl’s Inc.,” said Dr. Mitchner, the school psychologist and club advisor.
“The benefit of Girls Inc. is to create a safe space for girls who don’t have one and learn how to grow its impact to remind them they’re strong, smart and bold,” said Ms. Haywood, another club advisor who has been involved with Girls Inc. for 3 years.
According to the Girl’s Inc. website, “Girls Incorporated of Long Island was founded in 2005 as an affiliate of the nationally recognized Girl’s Incorporated, a non-profit organization serving only girls with roots dating back to 1864. Girls Inc. Long Island responds to the changing needs of girls and their community through the implementation of research-based program and advocacy.”
The mission of Girl’s Inc. is to help young girls entering womanhood understand what they want to be and what they want to accomplish, especially while being a woman. Those women who do accomplish their dreams can also share their story to inspire future generations of young girls.
Jocelyn Acosta, a junior, has been a part of Girls Inc. since the end of last school year. She is one of the students who attended the luncheon field trip. Acosta explained that what Girl’s Inc. means to her is “a place where I can go so I’m not home all the time.”
It’s not too late to join Girl’s Inc.! Meetings are Wednesdays after school from 2:00-2:45 p.m. in room 1605, located in the art wing.
