On April 1, BHS will be taking its recycling to another level. BHS has an outstanding recycling club and on Saturdays the students go around and recycle throughout the Brentwood community. Now, an army of robots will take over the school to ensure proper recycling is occurring during the school day.
Since more advanced technology is now available, Brentwood aims to utilize this to benefit the school district and reaffirm the importance of recycling with students and teachers. These robots will go to each class and cafeteria to recycle all plastic bottles necessary.
They also will walk around during the break between class periods. These robots also have an amazing feature where they scold students and make sure they recycle their water bottles.
“They are cute and helpful,” said Alexia Garcia, a sophomore. “They remind me every day to recycle.”
There are five robots in total. Two robots are small and funny-looking and the other three are physically fit and tall.
“They are the highlight of my day when I see them,” said Mrs. Rodrigo, a lunch monitor.
Each robot was named by the recycling club. The two smaller robots are Mrs. Cycle and Mrs. Eco. The taller ones are Mr. Squeaky Clean, Mr. Green, and Mr. Rot.
“They are so annoying! They be EVERYWHERE,” said Sofia Green, a junior.
The small robots have a feature to recycle only plastic products and to be on the lookout for any roaming water bottles on the floor. The tall robots’ features are to look for paper recyclables in addition to plastic. They can also reprimand any students that aren’t recycling by chasing and beeping at them.
“I get the point, but do we really need to be this extra?” said Jeff Hugh, a senior.
Since these robots’ features and materials are unique due to their specialty in their work, the high school paid $2,000 per robot, for a total of $10,000. “With their new features, it will be more fun and motivational to recycle,” said Mr. Rodriguez, an administrator.
Every day, technology becomes more advanced which means the robots will only improve over time. It has been said that by next year, these robots will assemble shows for classes about why recycling is important. They will also set up more recycling bins everywhere with high security for their data.
Over time, BHS expects to see great results, adding more robots to its recycling army and keeping the halls and classrooms clean!
