Students went the distance on Sunday, April 7, for the annual Gary Mintz Pancake Run, along with Brentwood alumni, faculty and retirees. Participants ranging in ages from 8-70 ran or walked the 5k race. There was even a dog!
Raffles were won, breakfast was served, and hamstrings were pulled. But all in all, the event was a huge success.
“There were definitely a lot more runners than last year,” said Dr. Dulin, acting principal at Brentwood High School. “A wide variety of participants always makes an event better.”
The Annual Gary Mintz Pancake run was once just a community race, but it was renamed after the man who created it, Gary Mintz, unfortunately passed away in 1995.
“We really try to make it as special as possible; every year is an opportunity to further bring the community together,” Dr. Dulin said.
Almost 100 people showed up to participate or to cheer on the runners. Not to mention, students generously donated their time in order to assist in serving savory breakfast meals and selling raffle tickets.
“It’s astounding how many of our kids were willing to help out,” Dr. Dulin said. “They’re just as responsible as the runners for making the run what it was.”
And the oh-so-exciting raffles! Eight gift baskets were given away that Sunday filled with goodies and treats. Our lucky seniors got the opportunity to go home with a free prom ticket or coupon for a free yearbook.
“I’d say the ticket was definitely worth the run,” said Aurora Portillo, a senior and prom ticket winner. “It’s really nice to not have to pay so much to have fun with my friends.”
Race winners in each age group took home a plaque, a medal, and well-deserved pride in their accomplishment. Some were so hardcore, they skipped the water stations while the rest of us tried our hardest to sip between breaths.
“I love having the opportunity to see my new students run this year and feel good about their work paying off,” said Ms. Pion, fitness club adviser at East Middle School. “It’s a great cause, and it warms my heart knowing my former club members still continue to run each year.”
