My Best Friend
March 1, 2021
My best friend left me
I remember the matching shirts we had
I had blue, she had pink
Hand in hand
Always together
My best friend left me
A couple of years later
I grew a little taller,
and my hair a little longer
Though the shirts were long gone
We were still hand in hand
Always together
It was deep in the night
With the moon oh so bright
A jump rope came to our sight
You were jumping while I was counting
When my turn came
I kept tumbling and tripping
You picked me up and helped me
Now, I was jumping and you were counting
My best friend left me
You started to be with your new best friend
while I observed you from far away
But once again we were matching, just like before
I had a blue mask, and you had a pink one
We’ve both grown taller
You were starting high school, and I was in 8th
I was healthy while you were battling for your life
My best friend never left me
Instead, I lost her
We could’ve had sleepless nights together
Talk about the guys we liked
We could’ve laughed about high school and how dumb we are
We could’ve fed the homeless dogs like we used to
You could’ve met Ace
I was unable to say goodbye to you
Even if I don’t want to admit it
I still miss you
Always together
¿Verdad, Darlyn?
(Rest in peace Darlyn, you would’ve turned 17 already!! Don’t worry, Tía is still feeding Ranger, and we have a new little pup in the family. His name is Ace, and he turned 2 last month. I’ll see you soon niño.)
