The Animals Catch Their Prey at Night
March 15, 2021
As darkness consumes the air, my brothers begin their hunt.
There she sits under the white light of the crescent moon.
Fear is absent from her eyes,
The darkness carries her up and drags her away
to the place where true animals live.
Day after day she comes,
finding comfort under the moon.
Day after day she leaves,
begging the darkness to let her go.
It brings her to a place
where animals hunt as she sleeps.
She is their prey; the animals love her
She never screams as – piece by piece–
they tear her apart.
Light is a fantasy:
while kids run towards it, she walks away.
In the light,
it is hard to tell monsters and friends apart.
They say monsters are animals that hide
in your closet, waiting to scare you.
But what about the monsters that hide
their intentions with a smile?
Darkness was a monster disguised as light.
To her, monsters are animals
that don’t know the difference between yes and no.
They mistake “please stop” with “keep going”
They mistake your cries for laughter.
Monsters are those that play games.
No matter how fast she runs,
No matter how high her dice rolls are,
She always loses.
The game favors monsters,
for they have a smile everyone trusts.
A smile that says, “Everything will be okay”
A smile that makes you want to root for them,
A smile that makes the game love them.
How can she win against a player
who knows all the tricks of the game?
Day after day she loses,
Day after day, they are there,
Her only companions
know what darkness is,
She knows they are light disguised as darkness.
We are the light no one dares to touch,
no one but her.
