Sophia Chavez, Staff Writer

About 146 billion cups of coffee are consumed by Americans each year according to Joe’s Garage, a Coffee Blog (that is a lot of coffee). Here are some coffee benefits and facts that some of my fellow coffee lovers may appreciate.

1.Coffee drinkers are healthy.

According to Evelyn J Stafford, caffeine lowers risk of certain cancer such as prostate cancer, liver cancer, endometrial cancer, and some cancers of the mouth and throat, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. Showing the benefits that us caffeine lovers benefit from.

2.Decaf isn’t what you think it is.

Decaf contains trace amounts of caffeine in it. According to Havard T.H Chan school of public health typical cup of decaf coffee has about 2 mg of caffeine, compared to a typical cup of regular coffee, which has about 95 mg of caffeine.

3.Black coffee saves you calories.

Black coffee has only 3 calories. In truth, there are calories in black coffee, but the number of calories depends on the beans, the roast level, and the brewing method.

4.Coffee comes from trees.

Coffee beans are the seeds of a fruit called a coffee cherry. According to Havard T.H Chan school of public health “coffee cherries grow on coffee trees from a genus of plants called Coffea.”

5.Coffee may have effects on mental illness.

According to Evelyn J Stafford if you have OCD, anxiety, and or any mental illness you should ask you doctors if you should switch to decaf. There are major side effects that include heightened alertness, arability, agitation, rapid heart rate and increase in blood pressure.
