As a society, being able to speak, write and read more than one language can help us come together for the common good. In a country like ours, which welcomes diverse cultures, nationalities and people who speak different languages, it is essential that individuals are able to speak more than one language. We need people who can communicate with individuals in our community. Our immigrants need police, health workers, education and other people working in public and government services who speak their language, since many people cannot learn other languages and thus communicate and function efficiently in society. Being bilingual or multilingual improves communication between people who provide and receive services. If we speak a common language, we have the opportunity to provide and receive quality services that advance our communities and therefore society in general. Another way that communities benefit from bilingualism and multilingualism is that if laws, institutions, and the people who enforce them offer information in multiple languages, individuals can better understand and know the rules of the community and thus Respect and follow them, this leads us to safer and more peaceful communities.
As a Spanish-speaking immigrant, arriving in this country without knowing any English, I felt confused and lonely being surrounded by people who spoke to me in a language I did not understand. A year after arriving in the United States, I moved to a much more diverse community and school than the one I lived in before, with students coming from all over the world, with different customs and languages. Finding such a variety of languages and cultures
gathered in the same community made me feel much more comfortable and at the same time happy. He was no longer alone! I understood that there are thousands of people around the world who, when starting the process of learning a new language, feel the same way that I felt, but that during and after the process they can communicate, socialize, learn, share and fight together for a common goal and a community that understands each other. As a bilingual teenager, I have the opportunity to share my culture, my ideas, my customs, and my experiences with a variety of people, and be able to understand theirs. Being bilingual also allows me to open my horizons to new topics that I had not explored before, and now, thanks to my understanding, I can research, read, and watch videos. So now at school I can take classes that interest me and that are not offered in my native language. So, I can use my knowledge in English and transfer it to Spanish to share information and help people who don’t speak English.
In the long term, being proficient in two or more languages gives people the opportunity to interact with others around the world and promote understanding as members of a global society. Personally, I am incredibly open to new things and to meeting new and different things and people. That is why knowing more than one language is an advantage for me and for others like me who seek to get involved internationally. I plan to learn more languages in the future and become multilingual to travel and get involved in other cultures and immerse myself in their customs and way of thinking. This with the objective of promoting understanding and multilingualism so that global communication is optimal and effective. Just like sharing knowledge and opinions about life. Being able to connect with diverse types of people through language is an enriching skill that will help us improve as a society.
