A Kingdom Apart

A Kingdom Apart

They say everyone is born into the kingdom they belong in. For the longest time that’s been true, that is, until Egil Steilsson was born. He was born into the Water Kingdom, while his brother Loki was born and crowned King of the Fire Kingdom. Little Egil was unaware of his older brother, meanwhile Loki was thinking of ways to get his little brother back, for this couldn’t stay this way forever; the Fire Kingdom and Water Kingdom are enemies.

Loki told no one of Egil being his little brother, fearing they would hurt Egil to get to him. It was a total surprise to everyone when the Fire Kingdom declared war on the Water Kingdom, the reason remaining top secret; nonetheless, the kingdoms come to aid their allies in their fight. The war lasted for five years, Egil being seventeen while Loki was going on twenty-one, before the unthinkable happened. Loki saw Egil there on the battlefield, fighting against the Fire Kingdom knights. Both happiness and fear clouded Loki’s eyes as he ran towards his beloved brother, only to be too late. A sword went through the boy’s chest, ending his life in front of his dear older brother.

Loki was devastated. After that he went to the Water Kingdom to create a peace treaty sign the reason he started the war just died. He agreed to pay his dues and make it up to the other kingdoms, no matter how grueling they were, he had just lost his brother, nothing else mattered now. While Tino, the King of the Water Kingdom, was unsure of his change of heart agreed, seeing as everything benefited his Kingdom.

A week later, Loki held a memorial for Egil. All the kingdoms were invited to attend. Upon their arrival they were all shocked to see, the Fire King weep over the grave. This had been the first time they had ever seen him cry, and they knew it wouldn’t be the last, for they now knew why. Everyone is born into things for a reason, and trying to change it will only bring an outcome you will regret for the rest of your life.
