Yerlyn Umana, Staff Writer
As the oldest child, Yerlyn Umana has always played mom. The role came naturally to her from taking care of her sister and helping her with her homework. That’s why she loves English and math since she spent so much time tutoring others. That’s where her love of reading came from. She spends her time mainly reading a book under her tree, the same way she would in El Salvador where she is usually visiting family. The older she gets, the more time she spends in New York (where she was born). The passion she has for becoming an immigration lawyer is so she can help families be reunited again. She would also love to bring her family members (cousins and aunt) to the United States so that her family can all be together once again. That’s why her mami is her role model since she has done so much, from raising Yerlyn and her little sister as a single mom, having to learn a new language to survive school. Her mami has helped her push herself into high honor roll.
