“Stay gold, Ponyboy.” These were Johnny Cade’s famous last words.
The Brentwood High School drama club performed the play “The Outsiders” on Friday, Nov. 17, and Saturday, Nov. 18. Both performances began at 7:00 p.m. in the Sonderling Auditorium.
In the play, a gang called the “Greasers” involving a group of boys named Ponyboy, Sodapop, Darry, Two-bit, Johnny and Dallas all despise another gang called the “Socs” or socials. Meanwhile, two beautiful young girls named Cherry and Marcia are girlfriends of two boys in the Socs gang.
“I auditioned for the play because I’ve always liked production stuff and it’s my last year, so I wanted to try it out,” said Kevin Hernandez Verdesoto, a senior.
“I did the musical last year and didn’t get a chance to do the play, so I got a chance to do the play this year,” said Justin Ivan Arias, a senior.
For some of the people in the cast, they joined this performance because it’s their senior year and wanted to give it a shot. For others, it’s because they love theater and will participate in every performance that the school offers.
“I’d say the most stressful part of being in the play is blocking, having to memorize lines and performing on stage,” Arias said.
“The most stressful part is being in character the whole time because during rehearsal, people laugh all the time,” Verdesoto said.
The actors and actresses were very excited to perform what they have worked so hard on. They put a lot of effort into the performance and rehearsed everything over and over to perfect it for the day of the show.
“I auditioned for the play because of Mrs. Ferzola, I thought I could help out and bring something to the table,” said Jose Luis Rosario, a junior.
There are many people who contributed to this amazing production. First, the directors – Mrs. Ferzola and Mr. Jackson – who are both English teachers at the high school. The stage crew, sound crew, and light crew all worked hard to help bring the show to life.
Then, there’s the costume and makeup crew, who made sure the actors and actresses looked their best. Finally, the stage crew managers, Jamier Hubbard and Alejandra Diaz, made sure everything ran smoothly backstage and onstage.
The play takes place in the 1960s. This provided a fun opportunity for costumes as students were able to wear clothing from that time period.
“I get to dress up as people in the 60s. I just don’t like the way my character is dressed up specifically because of the tight pants,” Arias said.
The school musical is just around the corner, so mark your calendars now! Show dates are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 9, and Saturday, Feb. 10, at 7:00 p.m.
