For seniors looking forward to driving to school instead of going on the yellow bus, there is now a new rule. For these past years, to have a parking space a student must obtain a letter from the front office and get it signed by a parent to be granted one. But to the frustration of school faculty, many have not followed these procedures and have instead stolen teachers’ parking spaces.
“How will we be able keep track of which students are paying and those who aren’t? said Daniel Lee, a staff member.
Recently, we have noticed that students come to school in their cars and park in our parking lot, the only ones allowed were seniors who did sign our permission slip at the beginning of the school year. This has caused many school staff and students who are permitted to park to come in late and traffic. To stop this, the school district has decided to make students pay $5 for each entry.
“Are you 100% sure this will happen and not cause any disruptions during the day? I believe it will, there’s no way that these students will not figure out a way to sneak in without paying…,” said Lee.
With this new policy, students and staff will find themselves in less conflicts. This means less traffic and not being late for class, as well less accidents.
“I do not believe they will use that money for our senior activities but for something else. Suspicious, don’t you think?” said Barb Sims, a senior.
The money earned from paid parking will be used on senior activities such as pep rallies, movies, cafe, and field trips, this is one of the reasons we chose to go with this policy.
“I think it is ridiculous about towing student’s cars if they don’t comply with the rules. So, what, will you make us leave school in the middle of the day just to get our car back?” Sims said.
“I believe this will cause outrage among parents, since they are most likely to be receiving phone calls from their kids saying that their car got towed and need them to pick them up,” Lee said.
If students do not pay for a parking space but instead sneak into an available spot, they will be called down to the front office to pay a fine. If they refuse, their car will be towed away. They cannot sue the school because when they filed for a parking space, this was mentioned in the paper, once signed this means it is an agreement between both.
At the age of 16, many students start learning how to drive and get their permits. Seniors should be driving instead of waiting for the school bus to pick them up as they are taking up too much space on the buses. Also, many seniors have early release meaning they can leave after periods 5-8. While there are early release buses they can take home, it would be more convenient for them to drive themselves.
“This is nuts. So now I am expected to drive and pay for parking because I take up too much space on the bus? Not my fault other students don’t like sharing seats,” Sims said.
Again, this rule only applies to those seniors who drive to school. Younger students can mind their own business! Unfortunately, if you do not take our advice and cannot drive you will probably have to go on the yellow bus, taking away space from others or being driven to school by your own parents, which is quite embarrassing.
